Chicken Pattern

Step-by-step
Materials and tools needed to sew the chicken soft toy about 7" x 7":

  • fabric - I show how to sew from boucle fur, but you can also take cotton, linen, fleece or plush. 9" (along the grain) x 21".
  • red felt for the comb and for the wattle 2" x 3",
  • beige or brown felt for the beak 1" x 1 1/2",
  • felt of any color (I chose beige) for the wings 3" x 7 1/2" (can be replaced with fleece)
  • black beads for the eyes (I chose plastic beads 1/4" diameter). You can also take black threads and embroider the eyes
  • threads for sewing and embroidery (on the wings)
  • polyester filler for stuffing
  • sewing machine
  • scissors
  • needles
  • pins
  • wooden stick with a blunt end (for turning and stuffing) - a sushi stick / wooden shish kebab stick / a simple pencil will do
  • ruler or measuring tape
  • thermo-disappearing marker for cutting / tailor's chalk / pencil

1. Print and cut out the pattern pieces. Place the patterns on the wrong side of the fabric, paying attention to the direction of the grain line (or the rows of stitches if using fabric with a knitted base). Trace the 2 side pieces of the chicken in mirror image and 1 piece of the bottom. Also transfer all the marks shown on the patterns to the fabric.

2. Cut out with seam allowances of about 1/2".
3
3. Connect the side parts of the chicken with the right sides facing inward and pin them together.
4
4. Sew the parts together on a sewing machine along the top of the parts (neck, head, back, tail) from the mark on the chest to the mark under the tail.
5
5. Sew on a sewing machine. At the beginning and end of the line, make several stitches first in the opposite direction, and then forward.
6-7-8-9
6-7-8-9. Pin the bottom piece to the side piece of the chicken. Then sew.
10-11
10-11. Pin the second side of the bottom to the second side piece and sew it together.
Don't forget to leave an opening for turning!
Then carefully cut the fabric from the seam allowances - leave about 3/8".
Make notches with scissors along the concavities - the back, corners on the tail - this is especially important if you are sewing from cotton or linen. To do this, you can make cuts with zig-zag scissors or use regular scissors to carefully make cuts perpendicular to the stitching (seam), not reaching the seam line.
12-13-14-15
12-13-14-15. Turn inside out. Use a wooden stick to help.
16-17
16-17. Stuff the body with small portions of filler. First, stuff the head and tail, then the chicken's belly.
18
18. Sew up the hole with a ladder stitch.
19
19. Here you can see how to sew a ladder stitch
20
20 Pull the thread and the hole will become invisible. Make a knot and hide the end of the thread inside the toy
21-22
21-22. Using a thick needle, make holes on the paper pattern to transfer the marks to the chicken's tail through them. Place pins for marks on both sides of the tail.
23
23. Now you need to stitch along the marked lines - look at the photo.
24
24. We make a fastening knot near the seam and then we go with stitches in the direction of our pin mark. We stitch the stuffed tail through. We reach the pin and then go in the opposite direction to the edge of the tail.
25-26
25-26. Cut out the felt parts: wings - 2 pcs, comb - 1 pc, wattle - 1 pc, beak - 1 pc - all parts are cut out without seam allowances.
Note: I cut out 2 beak parts, because I had thin beige felt and I decided to sew the beak in 2 layers).
27
27. Sew the comb to the chicken’s head with red thread.
28-29
28-29. Sew the wattle to the chicken's head. First, sew along the middle line. Then fold the halves and sew them along the line close to the chicken's head.
30-31
30-31. Sew the beak to the chicken’s head above the wattle.
32-33
32-33. Place the wings on the sides of the chicken, pin and sew.
I chose the "check mark" stitches and used these stitches to sew the wings to the sides of the chicken.
You can come up with other options - for example, sew along the perimeter with a running stitch or a back stitch - as your soul and imagination ask. You can make bright embroidery or appliques. Or sew the wings so that the chicken can lift them.
There are no restrictions here and your imagination can manifest itself in a variety of ways!
34
34. Pin the eyes to the chicken's head. I used black beads. You can also use special toy eyes, buttons, felt circles, or embroider them with black thread using a French knot.
35-36
35-36. Attach the eyes with pins and then sew them on. You can see in the photo how to sew on the bead eyes.
